An iconographical and textual study on the most famous Indian female poet Karaikkalammaiyar, one of the 63 nayanmar or Saiva saints. This work is based on research done in India, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia during 1994-2006.
This work is interesting for scholars and specialists of South Indian art and is the first complete publication of this saint in English.
It describes the dwelling place of Siva Nataraja, the forest at Tiruvalangadu in South India where Siva performed his famous dance.
As mythology tells us, Karaikkalammaiyar formerly known as the beautiful Punitavati, literally gave up her life in this world to worship Siva and to accompany him in his dance on the cremation fields in Tiruvalangadu.
