A Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey has indicated the presence of a
buried heritage city beneath Puri, the sacred land of Lord Jagannath.
The findings came to light during and after excavation work linked to
the Srimandir Parikrama Project. The remains of a historic settlement
are not limited to the areas surrounding Srimandir, but appear to be
spread across large parts of the city at key locations,
including Emar Math, Nrusingha Temple, Budhi Maa Temple, and along the
road leading to the shrine. The report highlights the existence of
multiple buried structures across an area of 21.6 square metres at
various locations. Notably, a possible underground tunnel stretching
from the Srimandir to the sea has also been indicated. Apart from
structural remains, excavation has also led to the recovery of artefacts
such as earthen and metal utensils, along with other items believed to
have been used in daily life, offering valuable insights into the
region’s past.
The high-tech survey was ordered after workers stumbled upon lion
sculptures, believed to date back to the powerful Ganga dynasty, during
the Srimandir Parikrama Project.
