Kattaikkuttu Diploma Course 2026

Since October 2025, the Sangam offers a first-of-its-kind residential
Diploma Course in Kattaikkuttu, also known as Therukoothu — one of
India’s traditional theatre forms. This course provides hands-on
foundational training in acting, singing, movement, and the repertoire
of Kattaikkuttu, all under the guidance of Guru P. Rajagopal and
experienced instructors. Participants also learn to play one of
Kattaikkuttu’s musical instruments (harmonium, mridangam/dholak, or
mukavinai). Upon successful completion, graduates receive a Diploma and
will be well-prepared for roles in Kattaikkuttu theatre, contemporary
theatre or the film industry.
Course Duration: 3 Months or 10 Months
The Kattaikkuttu training is primarily designed as a 10-month course
that allows participants to develop foundational skills in all aspects
of Kattaikkuttu and its repertoire. However, we also offer 3-month
segments, which culminate in the production of a play — with successful
participants earning a Certificate.
Who is this Course For?
This course is intended for individuals over 18 years who wish to
acquire foundational skills in Kattaikkuttu. It is suitable for
contemporary performers (actors, dancers, musicians), theatre directors,
and (theatre) scholars seeking practical experience to complement their
academic knowledge. We welcome applicants with experience in the
performing arts and fluency in the Tamil language, although these are
not absolute criteria for admission. The course takes place at the
Kattaikkuttu Sangam in Punjarasantankal, which is located 8 km outside
Kanchipuram.
Course Fee
The course fee is ₹ 15,000/ per month and includes on-site accommodation
and meals. The Sangam is a not-for-profit NGO that promotes
Kattaikkuttu and aims to transmit the theatre’s knowledge and skills.
Your contributions help ensure fair compensation for our teachers.
Additionally, we actively seek fellowship opportunities for those
enrolling in the 10-month course who may require financial assistance.
