Padukkai Jadaamudi Sidhar and Praana Deepika Sidhar who performed tapas here, worhipped a Sivalingam under a nelli (amla) tree and hence the Lord was called Nelliappar. Nelli is Dhaathri in Sanskrit and hence the Lord is also kwown as Dhaathreeswarar. The present temple is believed to be constructed by the Pandya king Jaadavarma Sundara Pandian I during 13th century. The king found the Amman idol in the flower garden. Since the area was a lush forest with sweet smelling flowers, the place came to be known as Thiru manam (Thiru - sacred ; manam - good smell). There are sannadhis for Adi Sankarar, Mahalakshmi, Saraswathi in the praakaaram. There are statues of various Sidhars such as Prana Deepika Sithar, Jadamudi Sidhar on the pillars.

The Nandhi opposite the Sivan Sannadhi is in a srene mood and hence it does not have the mookanaangayiru (nose rope). There is no navagraha sannidhi in this temple.

Speical abishekams are done to Murugar on Kaarthigai, Aadi and Thai Kiruthigai, Thai Poosam, Panguni Uthiram. On Kaarthigai Deepam day ghee lamps are lit for all the 27 nakshathrams (stars) in the Sivan Sannidhi. Thirukalyanam (marraige ceremony) is performed for Natarajar and Sivagami amman on Thiruvaadhirai day.
