SRI KRISHNA GANA SABHA

The Sabha was started by Maharajapuram Santhanam in 1954, with Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer as its President. Concerts were held in the Hindi Prachar Sabha premises in T.Nagar to start with. In 1957, Mr.Yagnaraman took over and conducted performances temporarily near Panagal Park. In 1961, the sabha moved to its permanent premises in Griffith Road. Mr. Yagnaraman has been the Secretary of Sri Krishna Gana Sabha uninterruptedly for 40 years.

A conference on dance - Natyakala Conference is a special feature of this sabha. There are three major festivals conducted each year - Gokulashtami Sangeetha Utsavam, December Annual Series and Dance Festival in April. The sabha also has several drama performances.

The Natyakala Conference has been held for the part 16 years. For the first 3 years, the Conference was conducted by Ms. Padma Subrahmanian. The Title 'Nritya Choodamani' is conferred on an eminent dancer every year. Only Nritya Choodamanis can be convenors of the Natya Kala Conference. The title bestowed on musicians during the December Festival is 'Sangita Choodamani' and for a theatre artiste 'Nataka Choodamani'.

A school for basic training in music, dance, veena, mridangam is run by the sabha, which was started in 1957. The most popular feature is the religious discourse programmes.
